Can You Leave a Laptop Plugged In All the Time: The Truth Without Myths
Many users are afraid to leave the laptop constantly connected to the power outlet. Does it harm the battery?
Modern laptops are smart
Modern models have power controllers.
When the battery is charged — the laptop switches to power from the outlet.
So it is impossible to “overcharge” the battery.
When it is safe
If the laptop:
- is new or up to 3–4 years old
- does not overheat
- uses the original charger
— it can stay plugged in all the time.
When it can be harmful
- Constant overheating
- Cheap charger
- The battery is already worn out
- The laptop constantly works under heavy load
In these cases the battery degrades faster.
Ideal mode
Optimal:
- 40–80% charge
- sometimes work on battery
- do not keep it constantly at 100%
Myth: the battery should be fully discharged
This was relevant for old batteries.
Modern Li-ion batteries can be damaged by this.
When to contact a service center
- the battery is swollen
- the charge drops quickly
- the laptop turns off without being plugged in
On average, a laptop battery lasts 3–5 years.
