One of the unpleasant situations is when a laptop suddenly stops detecting the drive.

Yesterday everything was working, and today — a black screen or a "No boot device" message appears.

Main reasons

1. System or Windows failure

Sometimes the issue is not with the drive itself, but with the operating system.

Signs:

• the drive is visible in BIOS;
• but Windows does not boot.

2. Poor SSD connection

This is especially common after a drop or after the laptop has been disassembled.

The SSD may have simply come loose.

3. SSD failure

SSDs also have a limited lifespan.

Signs:

• the laptop takes a long time to respond;
• the system freezes;
• the drive disappears periodically.

4. Problems with the motherboard controller

Sometimes the issue is not with the drive, but with the motherboard itself.

5. BIOS or firmware update

After an update, the drive operating modes may change (for example, AHCI / RAID).

What to check

• whether the drive is visible in BIOS;
• whether it is detected in another laptop or PC;
• whether reinstalling the system helps.

Important

Do not restart the laptop multiple times — this may make data recovery more difficult.

When to contact a service center

• the drive is not detected;
• there is important data on it;
• the laptop freezes during startup.

In such cases, data recovery is often possible, but the sooner you contact a service center, the better the chances of saving your data.
