Why Your Laptop Is Charging Slowly: 7 Real Reasons and What to Do About It
Slow laptop charging is one of the most common reasons for service requests. Yesterday it charged in one hour, and today — 4-5. Why does this happen and is repair always needed?
Let’s look at the real reasons.
1. Non-original or weak charger
If a non-original power adapter or a universal charger is used — the laptop may receive insufficient power.
This is especially relevant for models with Type-C that require 65–140W.
What to do:
Check the power of the charger (W). If it is lower than recommended by the manufacturer — charging will be very slow.
2. Worn-out battery
Over time, the battery loses capacity and starts charging more slowly. Sometimes the controller limits the speed to avoid overheating.
Signs:
- charging takes a long time
- the laptop discharges quickly
- the percentage “jumps”
Solution: battery diagnostics and replacement.
3. Damaged cable or connector
Even a small looseness in the power connector or a damaged cable can reduce the current strength.
Signs:
- charging appears and disappears
- the plug gets hot
- you need to “catch” the cable position
This is already a reason for repair.
4. Working under heavy load
If the laptop is playing games or running heavy programs during charging — energy is consumed faster than it charges.
Visually it seems that charging is slow, but this is a normal process.
5. Dirty connector
Dust and debris in Type-C or DC-in can worsen the contact.
Signs:
- charging works unstably
- the plug is not inserted fully
6. Problems with the power controller
There is a microchip on the board that controls charging. If it is damaged — charging becomes slow or unstable.
This is already a complex repair.
7. System or BIOS settings
Some laptops have battery protection modes (up to 60–80%).
Also drivers or BIOS may limit the speed.
When to contact service
If:
- charging has become 2–3 times longer
- the power adapter gets hot
- the connector is loose
- the laptop charges only at an angle
— diagnostics is needed.
In most cases the problem is solved without expensive battery replacement, but it is better not to delay.
