Laptop Screen Brightness Cannot Be Adjusted: Causes and What to Do

Laptop screen brightness can usually be adjusted using the function keys on the keyboard or through Windows settings. However, sometimes the screen remains too bright or too dark, the brightness slider disappears, or pressing the brightness keys has no effect.

This issue does not always indicate a display failure. It is often related to Windows settings, the graphics driver, system updates, or laptop manufacturer software. However, in some cases, the inability to adjust brightness may indicate a faulty display panel, display cable, or other hardware components.

Below, we explain why laptop brightness may stop working and what users can safely check themselves.

How to Identify the Problem

The issue may appear in different ways:

  • the brightness increase and decrease keys do not respond;
  • the brightness indicator appears, but the image does not change;
  • the brightness slider has disappeared from Windows settings;
  • the slider moves, but the screen brightness remains unchanged;
  • after a Windows update, the brightness becomes locked at one level;
  • after reinstalling Windows, the screen constantly operates at maximum brightness;
  • brightness adjustment works only after restarting the laptop;
  • brightness adjustment stopped working after the display was replaced.

Before starting any troubleshooting, restart the laptop. Sometimes the issue is caused by a temporary driver or system service failure and disappears after a standard Windows restart.

1. Check the Brightness Adjustment Keys

On most laptops, brightness is adjusted using the keys in the top row, usually from F1 to F12. The appropriate keys are marked with a sun icon.

Depending on your laptop model, try one of the following:

  • press the brightness decrease or increase key;
  • hold down Fn while pressing the corresponding brightness key;
  • press Fn + Esc to change the function key mode, then check the brightness controls again.

If other function keys also do not work—for example, you cannot adjust the volume or mute the microphone—the issue may be related to missing laptop manufacturer software.

The following applications may be required for the function keys to work correctly:

  • Lenovo Vantage or Lenovo Utility;
  • MyASUS;
  • HP Support Assistant;
  • Dell SupportAssist;
  • AcerSense;
  • MSI Center.

Do not download applications from unknown websites. Use the laptop manufacturer’s official website or the Microsoft Store.

2. Try Changing the Brightness Through Windows Quick Settings

In Windows 11:

  1. Click the area containing the network, sound, and battery icons in the lower-right corner.
  2. Find the slider with the sun icon.
  3. Move it to the left or right.

In Windows 10:

  1. Click the Action Center icon in the lower-right corner.
  2. Find the brightness control.
  3. Adjust the brightness level.

If the slider moves but the screen does not respond, you will most likely need to check the graphics adapter or monitor driver.

If the slider is completely missing, Windows may not be detecting the display correctly or may be using an incorrect graphics driver.

3. Check the Display Settings

In Windows 11, open:

Start → Settings → System → Display → Brightness.

In Windows 10, open:

Start → Settings → System → Display.

Try changing the position of the Brightness slider.

If the control is missing, unavailable, or does not affect the image, proceed to checking the drivers.

Important: The Windows brightness slider may not be available for an external monitor. In most cases, the brightness of an external monitor must be adjusted using the buttons or joystick on the monitor itself.

4. Check the Graphics Driver

An incorrect or generic graphics driver is one of the most common reasons why screen brightness adjustment stops working.

To check the graphics adapter:

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand the Display adapters section.
  4. Check the device name.

If Microsoft Basic Display Adapter is shown, Windows has probably not installed the full graphics driver.

Also check whether there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the graphics card name. This may indicate a driver error or hardware problem.

To install the driver:

  1. Identify the exact laptop model.
  2. Go to the manufacturer’s official website.
  3. Open the support or drivers section.
  4. Select your laptop model and Windows version.
  5. Download the recommended graphics driver.
  6. Install it and restart the laptop.

On laptops with two graphics adapters, you may need to install the integrated Intel or AMD graphics driver first, followed by the NVIDIA or AMD dedicated graphics driver.

We do not recommend downloading drivers from unknown websites or using questionable automatic driver installation programs.

5. Check the Monitor Device in Device Manager

Windows uses a separate system driver to identify the display.

Follow these steps:

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Open Device Manager.
  3. Expand the Monitors section.
  4. Find Generic PnP Monitor or a similar device.
  5. Make sure there is no yellow exclamation mark next to it.

If the device is disabled:

  1. Right-click it.
  2. Select Enable device.

If the monitor is detected with an error:

  1. Right-click it.
  2. Select Uninstall device.
  3. Do not select the option to delete the driver if Windows offers it.
  4. Restart the laptop.

After restarting, Windows will usually detect the display again automatically.

6. Check for Windows Updates

The issue may occur after an unsuccessful update or because required system components are missing.

In Windows 11, open:

Start → Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates.

In Windows 10, open:

Start → Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → Check for updates.

Install all available updates and restart the laptop.

Also check for optional updates:

Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates.

This section may contain drivers for the display, graphics adapter, or system components.

If the issue appeared immediately after a Windows update, do not rush to reinstall the operating system. First, check whether a newer driver is available on the laptop manufacturer’s website.

7. Check the Manufacturer’s Application

Some laptops use additional services to control the display, power settings, and function keys.

Open the laptop manufacturer’s application and check:

  • whether driver updates are available;
  • whether all required system components and utilities are installed;
  • whether a special display mode is enabled;
  • whether the automatic diagnostics report any errors.

In Lenovo Vantage, MyASUS, HP Support Assistant, Dell SupportAssist, AcerSense, or MSI Center, section names may differ depending on the laptop model and application version.

After installing updates, always restart the laptop.

8. What to Do If the Problem Appeared After Reinstalling Windows

If brightness adjustment stopped working after reinstalling the operating system, the most common cause is one or more missing drivers.

We recommend installing drivers from the official support page for your laptop model in the following order:

  1. chipset driver;
  2. system components or power management driver;
  3. Intel or AMD integrated graphics driver;
  4. dedicated graphics card driver, if installed;
  5. function key utility;
  6. other recommended drivers.

After installing each important system component, it is advisable to restart the laptop.

9. Why Brightness May Not Work After Display Replacement

If the issue appeared immediately after the display panel was replaced, the cause may be hardware-related.

Possible causes include:

  • the installed display panel has different specifications;
  • the display is not fully compatible with the specific laptop model;
  • an incompatible backlight type is being used;
  • the display cable is damaged or connected incorrectly;
  • the display connector is damaged;
  • there is a fault in the backlight control circuitry.

In this situation, we do not recommend disassembling the laptop or reconnecting the display cable yourself. The laptop is still powered by its battery, and incorrect actions may damage the display panel or motherboard.

10. Could the Display Panel Itself Be Faulty?

Yes, although software-related causes are more common.

Possible signs of a display or backlight failure include:

  • brightness changes suddenly or unevenly;
  • the screen periodically becomes very dark;
  • the backlight flickers;
  • the image changes when the laptop lid is moved;
  • one part of the screen is dimmer than another;
  • brightness adjustment stopped working after the laptop was dropped or hit;
  • the issue appeared after a repair or display replacement.

These symptoms require professional diagnostics. The cause may not only be the display panel but also the display cable, connector, or motherboard.

What You Should Not Do

If the brightness cannot be adjusted, we do not recommend:

  • downloading drivers from unknown websites;
  • installing several automatic driver update applications at the same time;
  • changing BIOS settings without understanding their purpose;
  • disassembling the display assembly without experience;
  • reconnecting the display cable without disconnecting the battery;
  • installing a random driver intended for another laptop model;
  • immediately reinstalling Windows without checking the drivers first.

An incorrect driver may cause additional problems, including system instability, screen flickering, reduced performance, or loss of image output.

When to Contact a Service Center

Professional diagnostics are recommended if:

  • the brightness slider works, but the backlight level does not change;
  • the drivers are installed, but the problem remains;
  • the screen flickers or periodically turns off;
  • the issue appeared after the laptop was dropped or hit;
  • the brightness changes when the laptop lid is moved;
  • the issue appeared after the display was replaced;
  • Windows does not detect the display panel correctly;
  • other image-related problems appeared together with the brightness adjustment issue.

A service center can inspect the display panel, display cable, connectors, graphics system, and backlight control circuitry.

Conclusion

If your laptop screen brightness cannot be adjusted, first check the function keys, the brightness slider in Windows settings, the graphics driver, and the laptop manufacturer’s application.

After reinstalling Windows, the issue can often be resolved by installing the correct chipset, graphics, and system component drivers. However, if brightness adjustment stopped working after the laptop was dropped, repaired, or had its display replaced, hardware diagnostics may be required.

Do not disassemble the display yourself unless you have the appropriate experience. The issue may be related not only to the display panel but also to the display cable, connector, or electronic components of the laptop.
