Laptop not charging to 100% — causes and what it means
At first glance, it may seem like a battery issue. However, in most modern laptops, this is normal behavior.
Manufacturers intentionally limit charging to 80–90% to extend battery lifespan and reduce wear.
If you see “Plugged in, not charging” at 80–90%, this is usually normal.
When it becomes a problem
- the charge does not go above 50–70%
- the battery drains quickly
- the laptop shuts down by itself
- the battery percentage jumps or behaves inconsistently
What to check
- battery settings in manufacturer utilities: Lenovo Vantage, MyASUS, HP Support Assistant
- Windows settings → System → Power & Battery
- whether the charger is original and has sufficient power
How to check battery health
Using command:
Win + R
cmd
powercfg /batteryreport
The report file will be saved in your user folder.
Or using programs:
- HWMonitor
- AIDA64
How to fix the problem
- disable charge limit in manufacturer utilities
- perform battery calibration (discharge to ~10%, then charge to 100%)
- reinstall the battery driver (Device Manager)
- replace the charger
When to contact a service center
- the charge does not go above 50–70%
- the laptop shuts down without reason
- the battery drains very quickly
